A little off-topic from my usual posts - so if not interested, stay tuned for future content!
Every year, I do a bit of decorating for the holidays, as a creative outlet. I’ve found several decent methods for creating nice looking fencing, gravestones, and other decor that aren’t expensive (and can sometimes be made for very cheap).
In this post, I’ll describe my fencing that I’ve used for the past couple years and how it’s constructed.

Construction
This fencing is made from 2x2 posts (at Home Depot, you gen buy these in 8 foot lengths), so cut in half down the middle at an angle. Spray paint / paint black or brown, and then screw in the Q hangers to hang your chain. I pre-drilled these with a small bit to avoid splitting the wood.
The most expensive part of this, is the chain I used. You’ll likely (unless you do a single chain, I do two), need two lengths. It’s ~$38 for 100 feet of chain, so not terrible compared to other options if enclosing a large area. See variations below for other substitutions.
Parts List
- Q-Hanger with Clip - $17 - (4x hooks needed per post)
- 2x2x8’ Lumber - $5, each piece makes two posts
- Plastic Safety Chain (Black) - I used 100’
- Black Spray Paint
- Orange LED lights - this matches nicely with the 100’ chain. Optional, but highly recommended for safety.
I HIGHLY recommend putting lights on the fence along with the chain, so that it’s visible for safety at night. Don’t cause an accident or injury.
Variations
- Rather than purchasing 2x2’s, you could use tree fallen branches or other posts, provided they’re similar size (4 feet).
- You could also use rope, or other materials instead of the chain. In my opinion for this style of fence, the chain looks best.
- Or, forego the chain entirely and just string up lights. At night, you likely won’t tell if there isn’t a lot of ambient lighting.
